Players start as immigrants arriving into the new world. Starting with just a basic skill and limited funds, players have to buy resources, learn new skills and work together to build the towns and earn money.

Settlement is a semi-collaborative game, players are playing individually but it is not possible to succeed without working with other players and combining different skills and resources. You have to learn other peoples names and seek them out to trade or combine your strengths to build together.

Settlement creates a simple development environment with all the feeling of accomplishment of working with others and the instant gratification of seeing the results of your labours in building the cities around the room. There are multiple strategies a player can take to advance, but ultimately it is how well you work with your fellow players that will be the driver of success.
